Learn how to use FaceTime on Android

How To Use FaceTime on Android

The new IOS 15 update for FaceTime has just been released, and it’s a big one. People are wondering how to use FaceTime on Android.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, FaceTime is an Apple exclusive video app that allows users to make video calls from their iPhones, iPads, or iMacs.

FaceTime has stood the test of time because each video call is protected by end-to-end encryption, so no one but the sender and receiver can access it, and Apple cannot decrypt the data.

It Internet Connectivity Establishment (ICE) to establish a peer-to-peer connection between devices. The user experience is also smooth since the app rarely lags. (If your phone is up to date) FaceTime has been a reliable app for video calls for almost a decade now.

Now the big question is:

Can you use FaceTime on Android?

The short answer is yes!

With the new IOS update, not only can you now FaceTime from iPhone to Android devices, but you can also share your Facetime link with another user, and they can join the call from their browser (Android or Windows devices).

Although you can join a FaceTime call from your Android or Windows browser, there currently is no app that you can download on the Google Play Store or the Windows App Store to make FaceTime video calls.

Everything is limited on the browser for now.

The reason behind this is that Apple keeps total control over calls to make sure every call remains end-to-end encrypted, so your privacy is not compromised when making or joining a call.

Can you make a FaceTime call from Android to iPhone?

As of now, you cannot launch a FaceTime call from an Android device to an iPhone or from an Android to another Android device. That option has not been enabled for security reasons as well.

Back to the previous argument, doing things this way allows Apple to keep the user protected from a privacy standpoint.

There are also some additional features such as sharing your FaceTime screen, the link goes beyond just messaging apps. You can share your FaceTime calls through Messages, Calendar, Mail, and third-party apps.

Apple also introduced Share Play, a feature allowing you to share your screen and audio during a FaceTime call.

This is a long-awaited feature and has been perfected by Apple because it comes with syncing option. Meaning, you can watch movies or listen to music with the other party while everything is synced and play simultaneously.

If you were to pause the video on your end, for example, it would also pause for every other user in the call. The same thing happens when you fast forward, it also fast forward on all devices in the call.

This allows third-party streaming apps to take advantage of this feature, as you can stream your favorite movies on your favorite platform with your friends or loved ones. (Apps like HBO, Netflix, Disney…)

The IOS 15 was announced on June 7th, 2021 at the WWDC event. As with many other big Apple updates, It will be released to the public in the autumn, around September 2021.
